Insurance for buildings with solar installations

In times when both environmental awareness and energy costs rise strongly, many homeowners decide to use solar energy whether photovoltaic or thermic or both. An energy installation is an investment for decades so considering an insurance cover for the solar system seems to be a good idea.

This is important because the risk of damage by storm or hail should be covered as well as protection against claims of third parties for cases when parts of the system are blown away in stormy weather doing damage to others′ properties or even a person.

Insurance adapt

In principle, on the roof or facade mounted solar installations are seen as part of the building and can thus be taken in relation to the property in the coverage of an insurance building. If a solar system will be installed later the owner must inform the insurer and the amount of insurance cover to be adjusted.

Otherwise, there is a risk that the agreed sum insured is no longer the actual demand for insurance and at a lower insurance, the insurance covers in case of damage, the costs will only partially or not at all be payed in the worst case.

Insurance against damage and loss of earnings

If the sum insured increases, as a rule also the insurance premium does, so it can be useful to conduct an insurance comparison and, where appropriate, enter into a new house insurance. It is also possible to choose a type of solar insurance dedicated exclusively to the protection of the solar system. This includes in most cases a so-called all-risk coverage.

In addition to hazards such as storms, hail, fire, explosion, lightning, a solar insurance then covers damage by frost and snow, vandalism and theft of construction or operation errors. It may also be generally agreed that the loss of income will be reimbursed in a particular setting.

Special acknowledgment in case of power supply

To reduce the amount of premium, usually a self-payment is offered and to avoid double insurance of residential buildings and solar installations, risks already covered by the house insurance can be excluded and this way are not part of the dangers of the solar insurance. However goes for the solar insurance that an insurance comparison always is very useful to completion.

The third party liability is covered by property occupied by a rule of liability insurance, but the insurer must also be informed. If the generated electricity from the solar system is fed into a public electricity grid, to fill some of the insurers insurance gaps however, so that it is strongly recommended not only to demand, but also have a written confirmation of the existing insurance protection.
